NYC is like an addictive relationship with me. I love the excitement, energy, etc. of the city, but…?

with the lack of a real sense of community, the fast pace, the competitiveness, etc. I feel like I am starving for something real, something more down-to-earth,. I have lived here for ab. eleven yrs., and I am enjoying my work (paid and artistic: teaching, writing, performing poetry, singing) but like a lot of peo. here in the big city my personal life, w/ a few close friends who are so precious to me, feels so dry. My life moves btw. two extremes: lots of excitement and satisfaction when I am out and about doing my thing and then most my off time spent on my own writing, singing, reading, studying, or in prayer/meditation. I have a great time when I go out to poetry readings, open mics, meetup groups, movies, shows, dinner, etc. with friends, but mostly it all feels so superficial. It’s like being on a starvation diet. Most peo. here just accept it, so I know I need to move, but I feel stuck. There is just something ab. NY. Some kind of magnetic pull. Feedback?

I lived in NYC until I was 10. I love it for the most part but I understand that feeling that you’re the only one in the city with a soul or something. It can happen to anyone in any city. I live in Los Angeles and certainly feel that way at times. All I can say is, I’ve been telling myself my whole life that I belong in a small country town, then I visit my relatives in a small country town and I am DYING to get back to city life. So you should probably consider an inbetween, like a suburb. But find one close to a city, or find a suburb that has all the poetry performance arts groups you need. There’s a lot to consider when moving. I was considering it recently then realized the new state I was thinking about didn’t even have my favorite chains of frozen yogurt, etc. and it’s funny the options you have in a city that you may grow to miss. I say take a vacation somewhere you would consider moving & think long and hard, you will make the right decision for yourself. Lastly, sometimes, it’s not the city, but the line of work you’re in, or it’s just you and how you feel. Working in TV vs working in a hospital can totally change your perception of a life in a city. But yeah, NYC is highly respected, so many people want to live there, visit there, it’s not the USA capital but it might as well be. It’s totally different to me than any other city because I grew up there. So I understand the magnetic pull. There’s something about the fast pace and the ability to walk most places that gives you a sense of independence you wouldn’t have in most areas because everyone is required to drive. The fast pace can actually help to motivate you.
