Merce Cunningham, one of the leading exponents of "American dance, Martha Graham's son and the father of all others, has died in her sleep at home at the age of 90 last July 26, leaving a pain in the area not only dance but also art.

"It has revolutionized the visual arts and performance, no intention iconoclast, but by the beauty and wonder that comes from exploring new opportunities ", which is written in the press release announcing his death, signed by both schools, Cunningham Dance Foundation and Merce Cunningham Dance Company.

Students marvel of Martha Graham, he was already when I was young, a male artist of extraordinary expressive power and sports along with the great choreographer. When he left Graham began his career as a performer and creator from the beginning to establish autonomous a close relationship with John Cage, composer and theorist who was also profoundly influenced the history of art.

Cage, Merce Cunningham has inspired especially as regards the methods of random composition (based on the choice of material composition by chance), the methods that have characterized his work throughout his career.

The collaboration between these two talents began in 1942 and lasted until the musician died in 1992, challenging the methods formal art of the 19th century, and rejected by Marcel Duchamp.

Cunningham extraordinary strength lies in a heavy dose of improvisation in combination with the formalism rigid. For this reason, pioneer Nam June Paik Video Art, said "Merce on the scene seems to wander aimlessly, but with an aesthetic sense." Cunningham choreographed movements of everyday action, the error of the moment and do not adapt, but face the music soundtrack. American choreographer assigned the role interpreters in their dancers. They are free to brake and accelerate the movement on foot or on stage, choreographic phrases to choose the sequence.

Thanks his talent, Cunningham left a mark "indelibly on our creativity and our collective culture" is written in the statement issued by its two foundations. Working with Cage, his lifelong partner, designed a new way to perceive and experience the world. "Merce was a Maverick artistic genius and more delicate. We lost a great man and a great artist, but celebrate his extraordinary life, art, dancers and artists with whom he worked, "said Judith Fishman, president of the Cunningham Dance Foundation.

Important figure of American avant-garde, genius and talent Cunningham has had an impact beyond the field of dance. Its talent extended beyond the choreography to acknowledge the ongoing collaboration with artists of various disciplines: musicians like John Cage and David Tudor, the designer Romeo Gigli and architect Benedetta Tagliabue. Merce Cunningham has had a great influence on the 40 and 50 years of visual arts, building profitable partnership relations with some of the great protagonists of contemporary American art, Robert Rauschemberg to Andy Warhol, Frank Stella, Jasper Johns, but also Bruce Nauman.

In April 2009, the Brooklyn Academy of Music in New York hosted the last work by the choreographer with the title explicitly autobiographical Almost ninety. The Cunningham Dance Company, composed of 14 dancers, will perform a world tour in two years dedicated to the godfather of post-modern dance, after which it will be closed permanently.
