Cross-country road-trip (LA to NYC)… what to see/do?
I’m currently planning a cross-country road-trip from LA to NYC with a couple buddies in August… we’re all mid-20 males and are just curious to hear about the must-see/do’s along the way…
We’re both European and enjoy crazy/cool stuff (anything from the obvious must-see’s, to stupid town names and weird environmental formations)…
We also love our American fast food (which shouldn’t be a problem).
We already have these things on our list:
Redrock Canyon, Death Valley, Vegas, Grand Canyon, Monument Valley… and that’s about it… still need Utah all the way east.
Any recommendations would be a great help… I’m thinking of anything from great beer breweries, to iconic restaurants, chill places, strange places, or even a good place to find cheap lodgings.
Anything photogenic helps too, considering I’m a photographer.

There is just so much to see and do on a USA road trip.
My first suggestion is to buy the Rand McNally atlas.
For the sheer convenience, get the book size, this gem has attractions, scenic routes, national parks etc. listed
While in Vegas, drive the 20miles or so and visit Hoover Dam (the new highway they are building in front of it will blow you away).
A little further east, The Sky Walk over the Grand Canyon (closer to Vegas, this marvel of engineering is some 250 miles to the main entrance of The Grand Canyon).
The walk itself is finished but there is still construction going on around it.
Don’t let the 14 miles of dirt road deter you – you see the Joshua State Forest, anyway!

While in Arizona, go south of Flagstaff to Sedona, the scenic Highway 89A alone is worth it.
East on I40 you might just as well turn south (past Winslow) and visit the Meteor Crater.

When you get to Texas (Amarillo) see Cadillac Ranch, it’s interesting art:

Don’t forget Gracelands in Memphis.

You appear to be travelling across via the southern states, are you returning via the northern?
Quickly, I will recommend.
In Illinois visit Chicago (follow the lakes for a ways) and Springfield, where you can enter the only home of Abraham Lincoln!
The Gateway Arch in St Louis is just over the Mississippi, so take the round lift to the top (the floor is curved too).
Fast food?
There is the world’s only floating McDonalds on the river below the Arch.
South Dakota is a treat, The Badlands (a photographer’s delight), Mount Rushmore (amazing), Crazy Horse (taking shape finally)
The Corn Palace at Mitchell (well you are going to be passing through), Wall Drug and Deadwood.
I could really go on and on and on, but for brevity’s sake (or is it too late for that?), I will end with Yellowstone National Park. Ohcantoh, if you only visit one NP in the USA – make it this one.
