nyc east village map
What is the difference between the west/east villages in nyc? are they both part of greenwich? also, soho… ?

i used to live there and i still have no clue. im so embarassed. well, not really, but seriously. anyone got a good map? whats the major diff. between the village and soho? also, what are some really great standout restaurants and or shops in the area? thank you ;) been a while for me havent been in years…! :(

The neighborhoods are vastly different. The East Village – generally regarded from 14th st.to Houston from Broadway to Ave. C – is an artsy area with a lot of great, affordable restaurants and bars (not as many dive bars as there used to be, but still really good). The Central Village – 14 – Houston, Broadway to 6th ave, is NYU territory – lots of college bars, some outstanding restaurants (Mario Batali’s Babbo, Otto and Lupa are all Central Village). The West Village goes from 14- Houston from 6th ave to the West Side Highway. This neighborhood is know for cobblestone streets, again great restaurants, good bars. A little more of a neighborhoody feel, lots of Brownstones.

SoHo (stands for South of Houston) runs from Houston to Grand street, from the Bowery to the West Side. Eastern SoHo is well know for shopping – lots of boutiques, just about every high-end store you can imagine, Bloomingdales, etc. SoHo used to be full of artist lofts, now it is much more chic. Some great restaurants there, as well, like Balthazar, Peasant, Savoy. Western part of SoHo is close in feel to TriBeCa (triangle below Canal st.). A little more industrial, but some great places down by Spring & Hudson like Don Hill’s (for live music).

Hope that helps.
