What are good solid work to do on a rainy day in New York City?

New York has a reputation for "doing good "rain days. On the other hand, there always seems to be raining when people visit outside the city. What are the good, solid, perhaps even free, to go out and see and do when it rains?

When it rains … You can see the Cathedral of St. Patrick Lawrence and across the street is Rockefeller Center, where you can visit the studios of NBC. You can go to the Sony building where they have a free interactive open house (it's fun for kids) and can be played with new technologies, for free. Some museums are great rainy day activities. Go to the Museum of Natural History, also joined the Hayden Planetarium (which has an IMAX theater, but better), also in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, located on the street Guggenheim Museum. In the same neighborhood is the Jewish Museum, the Cooper-Hewitt Museum, and I think a museum of photography. You can see a matinee on Broadway. You can go shopping. Do not expect to take a taxi.
