How do you pay for a subway in NYC?

Hello. I’ll be going to NYC on 8/5. The following day, I’ll be following the following itenerary:

1. Howard Johnson Inn
1300 Sedgwick Ave
Bronx, NY 10452

2. Little Havana
30 Cornelia St, New York 10014
Btwn Bleecker & W 4th St

3. Niketown
6 E 57th St
New York, NY 10022
(212) 891-6453

4. Staten Island Ferry (both ways)
Whitehall St and Water ST

5. Empire State Building
350 5th Ave
New York, NY 10118
(212) 736-3100

I already planned out this trip with the MTA NYC Transit Trip Planner. From what I can tell, I’ll have to pay two dollars every time I get on the subway. I take it I don’t just hand my money to the conductor. So, how do I buy tokens and/or a pass for the subway. If possible, I’d like to be able to purchase mine in advance.

Thank you for your assistance.

Subway stations no longer use tokens but instead ticket machines called MetroCard. Using a touchscreen, enter language, and press “new card”. Then enter the amount. Since you will be using the card numerous times, say $12.00. That will get you 6 trips. Then enter cash or credit card. The machines do give change, but unfortunately dollars are given back in coin which is not in general use, so I suggest using the exact amount. Then all you do is take your MetroCard. Use it like a credit card, for as long as you need to.
